Conference

museOn forscht Museums and universities – Centres of mutual knowledge exchange

International Research and Networking Conference from 25th to 26th February 2016 staged by museOn | advanced education and network at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg

Museums and universities are key scientific and cultural institutions in our society. They are conveyors of knowledge and research institutions, making their impact on the civic landscape and jointly acting as centres of collection, conservation and research. Since the Renaissance, they have established themselves as professional seats of learning and teaching and have an enduring effect on all aspects of social and scientific life.
Universities and museums are also the two groups of institutions, between which museOn | advanced education and network started work in 2014. In collaboration with museOn, the Freiburg Academy for Museum, Exhibition and Collection Knowledge (FRAMAS) at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg is developing a modular scientific online education programme with practical sessions for those who work or would like to work in museum, archive and exhibition venues.

museOn has set its sights on the critical scrutiny and scientific underpinning of its work and in this context is organising its first conference, during which the following three topics will be the subjects of investigation:

Centres of Mutual Knowledge Exchange

Both universities and museums are critically assessed as scientific institutions with respect to their performance for museum work:
How do various institutions collaborate? Who is researching with whom? How do museums and other cultural institutions use fundamental research and technical innovation for their infrastructure? How are new research programmes developed at universities based on museum practice?
By discussing various projects, interconnecting structures between museums and universities centres of knowledge and research are studied. Moreover, in this way, museOn explores both the scientific framework and the need for scientific advanced education. More information about the conference programme here.

Research Dissertations on Module Content

The advanced education programme is based on various modules corresponding to the functional areas of a museum. During the first conference of museOn | advanced education and network, scientific content and current research dissertations should be discussed with respect to the exhibiting, managing, collecting, digitising and reviewing modules currently under development.
The results of the individual discussion sessions, which always start with various keynote speeches, should also serve to check on the development of the programme.
At the same time, museOn expects new knowledge to emerge for all conference participants. The results of the conference will be medially documented and published online together with the conference documentation.

Promoting an Active Community

With regard to the programme, it is museOn’s objective to proactively “network”. The formation of a Community automatically goes hand in hand with museOn’s development, since museOn is developing the modules with numerous partners from the museum scene, who together work out the teaching material. When implementing the courses, small learning groups in the attendance and online sessions foster active intercommunication within the museum scene. Thus, the acquired knowledge and extended networking can lead to professional and sustainable collaboration. The development of a community is supported at the conference by appropriate formats. In addition, a “Project Slam 7×7” is organized, where seven collaborative projects, which are currently at the concept stage, will be presented. The Call for projects ended in December 2015. The winning project will receive financial support for project implementation. More information.
